The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially declared the start of rainy season in the country. And as we all know that during this season, people deal with heavy rains and sometimes, destructive floods. Common household problem during this season is water leaks. Water leaks can cause a lot of headaches and may bring serious damages to your home including structural damages, mold and mildew and unhealthy conditions from stagnant water that may breed pests and insects.

Locating water leak at your home is not an easy job. A thorough inspection is needed and repairs should follow up immediately. So here are some tips on how to locate water leaks at your home and how to repair them:

1. Check the roof

Roof/Rooftop is the main structure that keeps the house protected from the rain. It is important to check this area first. Look for any cracks or holes on the area. You can also notice some signs that will tell you that there is a water leak. These include:

  • Musty odors in certain rooms.

  • Water stains on your ceiling.

  • Spots on your exterior walls.

  • Bulging patches on your interior walls.

  • Missing or warped shingles.

2. Check doors and windows

Check for leaks on your doors or windows especially on the corners. Check for peeling paint or paint discoloration or swelling of frames.

3. Check exterior walls.

Exterior walls should be sealed and well-painted. Shrubs and other landscaping features should not be placed along the walls. See if there are any structural cracks that water may penetrate.

4. Make it rain

If you can’t find your roof leak with a quick inspection, then it’s time to make it rain. Have somebody, or a helper, to stay inside the house near the spot where you first noticed the leak. Then, go up on your roof with a garden hose and soak your roof one section at a time. Have your helper once they see a drip. Move slowly from one side to the other, spend at least 3 minutes in each side. This will help locate the source of your roof leak. If your helper sees a drip, but can’t find the exact spot where it’s coming from, start tearing up shingles in the suspected area. You’ll quickly find evidence in the form of water stains, or even rotting wood.

5. Repair the damage

Once the source of leak is located, do the repairs immediately.
